  • Coos Bay Lighthouse. Located on Chief's Island just off a section of the Oregon coast, the Cape Arago Lighthouse is roughly 10 miles southwest of Coos Bay. Cape Arago's tower is 44 feet high, and was illuminated in 1934. Two earlier lighthouses, one constructed in 1866 and another in 1909, were built on the same site but no longer stand. [Top]
  • Shore Acres Botanical Gardens. Explore the beauty of the gardens at Shore Acres State Park. Originally the private summer home of shipbuilder and lumberman Louis J. Simpson, the gardens were purchased by the state in 1942. The home is no longer standing, but the gardens offer interesting and unique flowers and evergreen shrubs and trees, including the largest Monterey pine in Oregon. Located at the very end of Coos Bay, Cape Arago State Park offers scenic views of the Pacific where visitors can enjoy sightseeing for whales and exploring tide pools for marine life. Walk along the north cove trail where you’ll find great fishing, and viewing offshore colonies of seals and sea lions at Shell Island, a designated National Wildlife Refuge.
