Shore Acres State Park. Explore the beauty of the gardens at Shore Acres State Park. Originally the private summer home of shipbuilder and lumberman Louis J. Simpson, the gardens were purchased by the state in 1942. The home is no longer standing, but the gardens offer interesting and unique flowers and evergreen shrubs and trees, including the largest Monterey pine in Oregon. Enjoy seasonal blooms amidst spectacular ocean views all year long. www.shoreacres.net [Top]
Gold and Silver Falls State Park is located in the Coast Range, 25 miles northeast of Coos Bay. This little known state park has two incredibly scenic waterfalls. You’ll see many different species of native plants lining the short hiking trails, including lacy maidenhair ferns.
Cape Arago State Park is located on a 134-acre coastal promontory jutting 1/2 mile into the ocean. Offering wild vistas of the pounding sea and Oregon's famous sea stacks, this park is the perfect spot to view marine mammals like seals, sea lions and whales. Picnic tables are scattered about the bluffs, and hiking trails lead to numerous tide pools along the beach.
Cape Arago Lighthouse. Located on Chief's Island just off a section of the Oregon coast, the Cape Arago Lighthouse is roughly 10 miles southwest of Coos Bay. Cape Arago's tower is 44 feet high, and was illuminated in 1934. Two earlier lighthouses, one constructed in 1866 and another in 1909, were built on the same site but no longer stand.
